ali: fear eats the soul

another wonderful fassbinder film. the story of an older german women falling in love with an arab man and marrying him and the underlying prejudice that rears it's ugly head as they continue with their relationship. if you aren't familiar with fassbinder and his films, this is one of his better films. i recommend that you watch it. i really enjoy his films.

running with scissors

a film based on the memoir of the same name by augusten burroughs. the film is entertaining, but it's based on a guy's teenage years, so it's awkward and missing something. i read the book first, the book is hilarious. it's written in a style similar to david sedaris. it's not in chronological order, but the film takes the stories and puts them in order. it's the classic tale of taking a book and making a film; the book is always your favorite.

le notti di cabiria

fellini is a genius. his films are absolutely beautiful, and this one was not disappointing in any way. it's the story of a prostitute looking for love in all the wrong places. such a sad story, but the performances are amazing.

the marriage of maria braun

the first film in fassbinder's BRD trilogy. it's a look at women in post-war germany. this is the first fassbinder film i've ever watched, and i'm now officially a fan. i'm not really sure how to explain his films. i need to read some more about new german cinema, in which he played a central role.

waitress

an adorable romantic comedy by adrienne shelly. this was light-hearted and hilarious. i throughly enjoyed it. it has some great lines and has a great message to enjoy your life. it's so heartbreaking that adrienne shelly didn't get to see her film be released. her death last fall is like an episode of law & order. read about her death.

jules et jim

francois truffaut's fabulous film about two close friends in love with the same woman. it's a beautiful look at love and life. (this seems to be the theme in my movie choices.) i recommend this one to everyone.

dear frankie

the story of a boy growing up in scotland who believes his father is writing him letters from aboard a navy boat. when the boat docks in glasgow, the mother quickly has to find someone to fill the father's role since she is actually writing the letters. it's a story about trusting someone and opening up your heart again.

rize

a documentary about dance "gangs" in los angeles. i found this documentary interesting. i didn't know such groups existed and their style is very unique. however, some parts of the film dragged on. i think it could have been edited down some more.

dreamland

this one is a story of a girl who has big dreams but can't seem to get out of the trailer park. it was another coming of age story; however, it was beautifully shot. i think the film and the script could have been developed some more. i think it was the filmmakers first film also.

i've also been watching joe swanberg's series on nerve.com called young american bodies. his films are so truthful and i connect with them so much. he's accomplished so much for a 25 year old.
